The 21st St David's Praise (for all who are counting carefully, yes we started in 1989 so this the 22nd year but we had a year off in 1995 when we did similar events in Swansea and Newtown!) And the party went with a swing!! Jeffrey Howard, as the main Music Director, was in fine form as the programme began with 2 young drummers in the auditorium and then the orchestra joining in with La Rejouissance from Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks." After joining in with a huge arrangement by Jeff, of Praise My Soul the King of Heaven, the audience were "fired up" and the atmosphere set! Taking the theme of "Jesus is King" the first half flowed with music both majestic, up-beat and reflective, from the 300 strong St David's Praise Choir, orchestra and Cambrensis Choir. The other MDs, Jonathan Davies and Anne Brown, led the choirs from time to time - and Jonathan, Jeff and Graeme Hunter (who also did a number of the arrangements and is a vital member of this "SDP team") were all at the piano at one time or another - all 3 being accomplished accompanists - what a wealth of talent there! A significant quiet moment in part 1 was Jeff Howard's "reflections on The Servant King" - and the first half ended after Dottie Rambo's beautiful and moving "Behold the Lamb" and Darlene Zschech's rousing "Worthy is the Lamb," with "Name of All Majesty," sung with the audience who were in fine voice! The orchestra opened Part 2 with the theme from "The Big Country" and then an American theme continued with some hymns and hymn arrangements, followed by Cambrensis singing some spirituals - including Were You There with bass soloist Simon Reynolds , After an "orchestral interlude" (Intermezzo from Cavelleria Rusticana) came a series of songs based on the Psalms, with some thought provoking narratives in between - from "Reflections on Psalm 46" by Kelvin Thomas, to Parry's "I was Glad" the audience were taken through a whole gamut of moods and emotions as well as musical styles and textures. Looking back to The Promise of Christmas 2009 Dec 5th at St David's Hall Cardiff ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Once again the 'Promise of Christmas 2009 has proved immensely popular with both matinee and evening performances playing to capacity audiences. The pictures above capture a few of those special moments - with the whole assembly ready to start - the Youth Choir in action and in rehearsal, and Kelvin Thomas, the conductor (AKA Captain Hook) along with members of the orchestra suitably attired for a rendition of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' orchestral interlude. Huge thanks to all who made this event possible once again. St David's Praise 2009 CD of Creation Sings now available Our latest live Album is "Sing, Creation!" So many have expressed appreciation and commented "The best yet!" We thank God for the dedication of choirs and musicians which led to such an uplifting occasion. In particular the ministry of the soloist Huw Priday was specially blessed and welcomed, and we are grateful to Huw for the way he so clearly exalted the Saviour. So many have worked to bring it all together, both publicly and behind the scenes, a real team effort, and too many to mention individually- but we couldn't have done it without all the vision, expertise, advice and leadership of the directors and leaders of Cambrensis - so a big thank you to all! FOR ALL OUR YOUNG PEOPLE! The new Cambrensis Youth Choir (for girls and boys aged year 8 upwards) has now begun! If you are interested in joining contact us at the office. |
