Jeffrey Howard
Music Director
Jeff’s association with Cambrensis goes back to the Choir’s formation in 1982 when, aged 13, he joined as a soprano. Thirty years later he succeeded Kelvin Thomas as the Choir’s Musical Director.
Jeff studied music at Cardiff University and the Royal Academy of Music and last year was awarded an ARAM from the Academy for his services to choral music. He has also received the Joseph Parry Award from the Welsh Music Guild for services to music education and was awarded the British Empire Medal (B.E.M.) in the 2019 New Year’s Honours List.
He is active as an arranger, vocal coach, pianist, organist and accompanist, working with some of the country’s most famous singers, choirs and orchestras including Sir Bryn Terfel and Sir Karl Jenkins. Until recently Jeff had for 6 years been the conductor of the Treorchy Male Choir. In 2018 he conducted the National Eisteddfod Choir at the Wales Millennium Centre.
Since 2018 he has been Director of Music at St John’s College and Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral.
Jeff is married to Rachel, a professional Harpist and teacher, and they are members of Highfields Church in Roath, Cardiff.
